Flower of the Month: The Aster Flower

Aster Flower
Asters, also known as Michaelmas daisies, are perennial flowers that bloom in late summer and fall. They come in several bright colors like white, pink, purple and red.

There are many, many types of asters. Some reach 8 inches in height while others can reach up to 8 feet. One of the biggest benefits to planting the aster flower is that you’ll be able get blooms of rich color well into the fall, when most of your flowers begin to wilt or die. Aster plants will also attract butterflies to your garden.

These perennial flowers can be planted in average soil, as long as they’re given full sunlight. If they’re planted in a shaded area, they tend to slump down a little bit. Full sunlight will ensure they stand straight and tall.

You should plant in spring and space the plants 1 to 3 feet apart. Loosen a foot of soil and mix in 2 to 4 inches of compost. Dig a hole twice as wide as the plant and place the aster inside. Then pack the soil gently.
