What are the Different Types of Fences?

Learn about the different kinds of fences and what each one is used for.

Backyard

Fences are used to mark the boundaries of a property, but they have many other uses, including privacy, protection, pet containment and decoration. Fences can be constructed from different materials, and each has a specific use and benefit. It all depends on what you’re looking for. Let’s take a look at the 3 most common materials used to construct fences.

Wooden Fences are durable and long-lasting. They will last between 15 and 30 years, depending on the type of wood used. They can be made of spruce, hemlock or cedar. When choosing a wooden fence, there are 3 basic styles to choose from.

PrivacyPrivacy: These types of fences consist of long boards placed side by side, with no visible gaps between them. They offer maximum privacy and are the most secure of the wooden fences. They also offer protection from heavy winds. These are the most common backyard fences, as they provide protection and privacy and are very durable.
PicketPicket: Probably the most famous wooden fence is the classic “white picket fence.” It’s made up of thin, pointed boards called pickets, placed 1 – 2 inches apart. Horizontal boards at the top and bottom connect them together. Picket fences are usually 3 – 5 feet tall and don’t offer much privacy or protection. They will contain small pets and children, though. Picket fences are generally seen wrapping along the front yards of houses.
RanchRanch: Rail fences are mainly seen on ranches and farms. They consist of two vertical posts placed about 8 feet apart, connected by 2 or 3 wooden rails. Their purpose is to contain large livestock, so they would rarely be seen in residential areas.
IronIron: Iron fences are generally built for decorative purposes; often placed around front yards and across driveways. These fences are similar to picket fences in their structure, except the posts are placed in a concrete foundation. This makes them extremely durable. They’re also easy to maintain and offer a good deal of protection.
Hollow VinylHollow Vinyl: This is a cost-effective material that comes in many styles and sizes. You can make it look like a metal or wood fence and save money. It’s also very durable, and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance.
Solid CellularHollow Solid Cellular Vinyl: This is an advanced, solid cellular material which has the look and feel of natural wood, without any of the downsides. Unlike hollow vinyl, solid cellular vinyl is milled, crafted and fabricated just like wood. You won’t even be able to tell the difference! Unlike wood, it won’t rot, warp, flake or peel. Maintenance is a breeze and your fence will last a lifetime. It’s available in over 100 different colors, so you can match the look of your home perfectly.
